Environmental crises are now a daily concern in labs all around the world, and scientists are racing to get ahead of the problems. In their latest e-book partnership, LCGC and LECO teamed up to turn a spotlight on some of the latest GC-MS and GCxGC-MS techniques that can help labs pull ahead of the curve.
Nick Jones, LECO’s Director of Global Applications and Development for Separation Sciences, takes a look at LECO’s toolkit of solutions. Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry is well suited to high-speed GC analyses such as those exploiting the strengths of using hydrogen as a carrier gas. Delving into a second degree of separation with GCxGC capabilities or high-resolution MS via LECO’s Folded Flight Path® technology allows for an even deeper look into your most challenging samples. Additional functionalities, like a Multi-Mode Source and innovative ChromaTOF® Tile software, provide even more ways to find the answers to the most difficult questions and „dirty“ samples.
At Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Chris Reddy, the senior scientist at the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry has been using GCxGC technology for over 20 years. He gives an interview about this technology and how it relates to his career studying environmental pollutions and biofuels.
The e-book ends with a look into microplastics. With the mantra „You can’t manage what you can’t measure,“ the study of microplastics focuses heavily on finding the contaminants and determining where they came from, stressing the importance of standardized methods for monitoring and testing the environment.
