GCxGC-MS: The Gold Standard Approach for Fragrance Allergens Analysis

Presented by:  Thomas Dutriez, Elsa Boudard, and Neil Owen from Givaudan

On July 26, 2023, the European Commission published amendment 2023/15451, expanding the list of fragrance allergens in cosmetic products from 24 to 57 compounds and requiring labeling for products sold in the EU over the next 3 to 5 years. Accurate data are needed to provide the right information to consumers in the EU, with potential extensions to other regions.

Achieving true quantitation of diverse chemical structures across a wide concentration range, from parts per million (ppm) to high percentages, is challenging, especially in complex natural substances containing over 10,000 different molecules.

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC-TOFMS) effectively meets fragrance industry recommendations by addressing the limitations of standard GC-MS, reducing coelution issues, and providing compliance-ready data with a higher confidence level and minimal implementation effort. With LECO, you get fast, accurate results, up to five times faster than most current methods, so you can make confident decisions, meet regulatory deadlines, and keep your workflows moving. This method has been validated through extensive use and is now considered the gold standard for monitoring skin allergens in the fragrance industry.

This webinar will showcase how comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography is a must-have technology for quantifying fragrance allergens with high confidence. It features Thomas Dutriez, Director of the Environmental and Analytical Laboratories within Regulatory Affairs at the world’s largest fragrance manufacturer, Givaudan, holding approximately 25% of the global market share. Dutriez is a key figure in the field, widely regarded as an expert in fragrance analysis today.
